Wanted to pass along some current events in automotive lending, here’s a brief read : Electric vehicle (EV) sales appear to be gaining traction despite industry concerns about waning consumer interest. According to the latest data from Cox Auto, EV sales grew by 11% year-over-year in Q3 and surged to record highs for both volume and market share. By the numbers: Roughly 346,309 EVs were sold in Q3 2024, which is a 5% increase over Q2. The share of EV sales, among all vehicles sold in Q3, rose to the highest number ever recorded at 8.9%. What they’re saying: “While year-over-year growth has slowed, EV sales in the U.S. continue to march higher,” said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox Automotive. “The growth is being fueled in part by incentives and discounts, but as more affordable EVs enter the market and infrastructure improves, we can expect even greater adoption in the coming years.” Digging deeper: EV incentives in Q3 averaged more than 12% of the average transaction price (ATP), compared to 7% industry-wide for all vehicles sold in the quarter. The “leasing loophole” enabled all EV buyers to qualify for substantial discounts with government-supported incentives. The average cost of an EV only rose 1% year-over-year in Q3, with an ATP just over $57,000. The industry-wide ATP in Q3 was around $48,000. Brand breakdown: While overall sales declined across the industry, most brands saw a noteworthy uptick in EV demand in Q3. GM’s EV sales rose nearly 60% to 32,095 in Q3, posting the second-best EV sales numbers for Q3 2024. GM’s surge in the sector was driven by the strong sales of its Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. Tesla remains the firm EV leader by a mile. Sales were up 6.6%, due in large part to a boost from its newly introduced Cybertruck. The EV automaker sold more than 16,000 Cybertrucks, with an ATP of $116,000. Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle sales remained flat year-over-year at 29,609. Ford was fourth in EV sales with 23,509, followed by Honda and Acura with 15,000 EV sales. Why it matters: Despite talk of an EV market slowdown, the reality is more nuanced. Yes, forecasts have been adjusted, but with an additional 1 million EVs set to be sold this year, the market is still expanding. While price concerns and infrastructure improvements are ongoing challenges, the segment’s upward trajectory — fueled by aggressive incentives and increasing consumer interest — shows that the EV transition is far from stalling. Please take the time to read the following article that describes the FTC’s current focus on the automotive industry : The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is making headlines for targeting Asbury Automotive’s three Texas dealerships—David McDavid Ford Fort Worth, David McDavid Honda Frisco, and David McDavid Honda Irving—in a lawsuit. The FTC alleges these dealerships engaged in “payment packing,” a practice where customers end up paying higher monthly payments due to unnecessary add-ons that they were not fully aware of. The FTC also accuses the dealerships of discriminatory practices against Black and Latino car buyers. Asbury Automotive has responded strongly, denying the allegations. The company argues that it has not received any complaints from the FTC about these locations during the relevant timeframe and claims its internal investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing. However, it was 1.5% lower than the previous year. 2. **Market Trends**: Yield spreads widened, term lengths shrank, and down payment shares remained unchanged but at historically high levels. Approval rates increased, and the subprime share of loans also increased. 3. **Channel and Lender Analysis**: 4. **Interest Rates**: The average yield spread on auto financing widened in March, resulting in less attractive rates for consumers compared to bond yields. The average auto finance rate increased, and the approval rate also increased. 5. **Subprime Loans**: The subprime share of loans increased in March to 13.0%, up 1.1% year-over-year. 6. **Contract Details**: The share of contracts with terms longer than 72 months decreased in March, softening year-over-year. 7. **Overall Improvement**: Credit availability improved in March across all channels and lender types, although on a year-over-year basis, most channels and lender types were tighter. To Our Valued Dealers, Last month, we announced TD Auto Finance LLC (TDAF) was planning a legal statutory merger of TDAF into TD Bank, N.A. We are pleased to announce regulatory approval has been granted and the merger will be completed on December 31, 2021. Action Required On January 1, 2022, and thereafter, all legally binding documents must be entered into by TD Bank, N.A. as the legal entity that will own and operate the TDAF business. On January 1, 2022, your Dealership Management System (DMS) must be reprogrammed to reflect TD Bank, N.A. as the correct legal entity. Retail Installment Contracts must list TD Bank, N.A. as the assignee. The lienholder on the Title must be TD Bank, N.A. The Retail Contact and Title Code form will be updated and posted on TDAF Dealer Hub, Route One and Dealertrack. Note: If there are any state-specific title changes required as a result of the merger, detailed information will be posted on the TDAF Dealer Hub. Reynolds & Reynolds and Dealertrack are attempting to make the changes at the provider level for the dealerships. Statistically we are behind pace to hit our targets for the groups Preferred Lenders, but a strong push through the weekend would put us back on track. A few stores have reached out to inform me of poor service levels with Ally, thanks for the feedback, the more feedback I get, it allows for discussions with our lenders to correct the issues. Ally has noticed an uptick in losses on deals that initially were declines, and rehashed/reworked to approvals have turned into losses at a faster pace than normal. The result is that these deals now must be reviewed by a Team Lead or Credit Manager, which in turn will slow down the response time. Thank you Ernesto Lopez (Chevy of West) & Colt (Patterson Kilgore) for making me aware that Exeter was not filtering through Ally Clear Lane Pass Through, there is an active ticket on this and I will let you know when it gets resolved, if anyone else is experiencing this please let me or your RFD know. A few Ally Financial reminders as we enter the second half of the month : Ally uses alternative data, this could be a customers check writing history, if they pay their utility bills on time, etc. These items can trigger a system decline, on tiers S through D simply put a note in DealerTrack or RouteOne requesting for a second look. This will send the deal to a buyer for review. Also OAG’s National Account status with Ally allows you to use the auction receipt plus buy fees for your book values. If you are a Lifetime Powertrain dealership (preowned units only) you may qualify for an additional $1000 of added book value, must be a 2017 to 2021 preowned unit with 75,000 miles or less. Westlake Financial Services | 08/23/2021 | Buying | On July 30th I announced that Westlake was a strategic partner with OAG. Since that time our part was to get them a look at every application so that Westlake could build a template for the group. This type of program is normally reserved for the big public groups or large online platforms like Carvana, Shift, etc. As a group we fell short of our application commitment, so we have to start over now. NSD provided us with a memo on 07/21/2021 assuring MOTiiV that they are on track for the F&I Sentinel launch of Hyundai Motor Finance, Genesis Finance and Kia Motors Finance. HCA launches October 1, 2021 on F&I Sentinel for GAP contracts. More and more lenders are starting to use F&I Sentinel to vet finance products. As that happens MOTiiV will work with Foresight & NSD to get our products approved so that the group will avoid any funding delays. Between now and the launch date you may see a funding delay or two stating a product is not approve, please forward that to vpm@motiiv.online so that we can get the deal pushed through funding, we just did one for Orr Nissan East this week. They are a third party company that captive lenders & non-captive lenders have employed to ensure legal, regulatory and reputational risks associated with the financing of third party ancillary products. They started small in 2018 but have quickly grown and are adding more lenders as clients. If you receive a memo from a lender rejecting a product or delaying a car deal in funding with a lender, forward that to vpm@motiiv.online immediately so that we can continue to work with ForeSight Services Group to make sure that all ancillary products are approved without causing any delays in funding with your lender base. Wells Fargo Auto | 07/16/2021 | Funding | There has been a huge surge of car deals going to Wells Fargo from the group, I’ve been monitoring the trend since December 2020. A few program changes such as cosign deals (buyers at different addresses) that Wells Fargo for years would not buy or fund is a large contributing factor. Before program enhancements, Wells Fargo was funding $2B per month and was staffed to handle that workload. Fast forward to 2021 and that monthly funding number has jumped to $3.1B and they were/are not staffed for that growth. Recently they have hired to groups of “new” funders that have to go through orientation then training, and that is a 45-60 day window to get them up to speed. This has resulted in delayed funding as they are on average 8 to 10 business days behind on new deals to fund. There is no way around the wait, no amount of fussing, cussing will change their current status quo. I’ve spoken with national account managers, regional managers and they are frustrated as well and understand if dealers need to send deals to other lenders even if the other lenders call is not as strong as their approval. Let’s try and find a faster funding solution other than Wells Fargo until they can get their funding up to speed. Thanks for all that each of you do!!! |

A survey by the Federal Reserve issued to “select large banks” signals that more stringent lending practices have been adopted for consumer loans, including auto loans. Sixteen percent of lenders who responded noted that lending standards for auto loans tightened somewhat over the past three months. Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive, said there’s early evidence of tighter credit standards at certain lending companies. Aside from aggressive incentive activity from automaker captives, which is beginning to wane, large non-captive lenders are starting to pull out of automotive originations. “There’s more conservatism on the part of the lenders. That’s why we haven’t really seen subprime or used-car [finance] rates come down, even though the [Federal Reserve] cut rates to zero,” Smoke said. Tighter credit standards could push more consumers out of the new-vehicle market, creating a drag on the industry and slowing economic growth. Credit tightened greatly following the housing market crash in 2008, choking loan access as lenders shifted cash in anticipation of higher loan losses. Restrictions on lending limited auto industry profits, and automakers piled on new vehicle incentives to generate interest and dealerships suffered from lost sales. Consumer spending accounts for roughly 70 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The majority of new vehicles sold in the U.S. are financed. Experian noted that about 85 percent of new vehicles sold in the fourth quarter of 2019 were obtained through either a loan or a lease. About 55 percent of used vehicles sold in the fourth quarter were financed.
